We had a well attended meeting this month with a Guest Speaker who kept us entertained with humorous tales of life as the Station Master at Murchison East Railway Station.
Jon Daivis was the Station Master there for 17 years and saw lots of busy times when the station handled many freight and grain trains and branch lines existed to Rushworth and Colbinabbin, and a branch line ran to Echuca from Toolamba. The railway gates at the Murchison East intersection were open and closed by hand.
As the train traffic dwindled and staffing went from 30 to 3 over the years, Jon’s duties varied greatly and he had to be versatile and flexible with the changing scene. He has many happy memories of working with the Railways until his retirement in 1990.
Our meeting next month will be our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday the 30th of March – all welcome.
